The Ross Tiger

Head of House: Mrs Victoria Carmichael

Tiger House Motto: SUPERBIA QUOD MAIESTAS (Pride and Dignity)

I have worked both in the public and private sectors and have met a varied mix of people and dealt with a plethora of interesting situations, but I have never been a part of such a positively unique community that we have here at Havelock. Every day is different, I never know what to expect of my Tigers, and I delight in their talents and quirks.

No two tigers have the same stripe pattern - each is unique, like human fingerprints. I encourage all members of Tiger House to embrace their individuality and take pride in who they are and what they stand for, without comparing themselves to others, and remembering that everyone has a talent for something. Every one of them has the potential to succeed and I urge them to chase their rainbows with the courage and belief that one day they will reach their pot of gold.

The Ross Tiger

Of the 12 "Cat" class trawlers in the fleet the Ross Tiger was the first to be built, serving from 1957 for 27 years in the fishing industry and seven years as an oil-rig support vessel for Cam Shipping. Despite the decline in the fishing industry, the most damaging being the "Cod War" in the 1970s, the Ross Tiger underwent a full re-fit in 1983 but only continued her fishing career until 1984 when she landed her last ever catch at Grimsby. All 12 trawlers were bought by Cam Shipping and the Tiger headed to Lowestoft for a three month conversion for oil-rig standby work which saw her stripped of all her trawling equipment. She was then brought back to Grimsby to begin her new career.

For a while Cam Shipping enjoyed prosperity but just like the fishing industry, the oil companies began to experience problems and the crews were laid off for increasingly longer spells between trips. As a result, and due to the age of the Tiger, it was decided to de-commission her for good. In 1992, the local council bought the vessel for the sum of one pound with the intention of restoring her to her former glory. The Ross Tiger is now moored in Grimsby's Alexandra Dock and is a tourist attraction, with guided tours available from the Fishing Heritage Centre.
