Science

Welcome to the Havelock Academy Science Faculty.

Modern life is ever increasingly showing us how science can make our lives different. This is usually good and positive, but occasionally science raises issues that are complex and difficult.

At Havelock we encourage our scientists to ask questions that are important to their lives and equip them with the skills to find out the answers. In the Science Faculty we ensure that our scientists have the correct atmosphere to ensure that they will make informed decisions, allow all learners to learn and feel that they are able to take the "risks" associated to develop a true understanding of their scientific world.

Our students are active learners and the skills involved in science help to develop key skills that will stay with the students long after the scientific knowledge has gone. Themed teaching, with units such as "The Healthy Body", "Show-time" and "Forensics" are just some examples of the topics we study. Units such as these encourage students to think beyond science and see how it makes links with other subject areas. Units such as these encourage open-mindedness, a caring nature, communication and risk-taking amongst other characteristics. Equally, there is an awareness of the importance of knowing how and why sciences work the way they do.

Examples of assessment range from making models to demonstrate understanding both through knowledge recall/application and through visual/verbal communication, writing recommendations based around the science investigated or a research document. By using such styles in assessment students are encouraged to think beyond the topic studied. Importantly, students will develop an understanding of the wider world around them. As the world becomes smaller with improved communication and transport we encourage our students to think beyond Grimsby and the UK and to develop their thoughts as to how science affects those whose way of life is different from our own. By considering others we hope to develop caring citizens of the world.
